Academic Writing
This section of the website is designed to help you develop your academic writing skills.
Please note that it is always best to check with your lecturer as to how they would like you to approach any assignments; these links and resources are therefore for guidance only.
General Academic Writing Resources
An excellent resource is the University of Manchester's Academic Phrasebank. It provides lots of ways to introduce citations and quotations and a huge range of academic phrases to use in assignments. Written with both essay and report writing in mind, this resource also provides a brief summary of each section of a document (e.g. introductions, conclusions, etc.) and what you might expect to find in the way of content. It also provides sample sentences to add diversity and flow to an academically written piece of work.
The Academic Skills Centre is provided by Birmingham City University and includes writing guides (essays/reports/literature reviews), grammar guides, presentation/speaking guides and general study skills guides.
Scientific Writing Resources
Engage in Research: The Interactive Resource for Bioscience Students is a website that specifically focuses on scientific writing. There are useful sections on Reviewing Literature, Step-by-Step Statistics and Presenting Science.
For specific marine science advice, you may find the University of Bangor School of Ocean Sciences 'A Guide to Writing Essays' helpful.
The Learning Centre team can also help you with aspects of academic writing; if you require any help please come and see us. Below are two documents, one on 'Common Academic Vocabulary', and a 'Glossary of Key Essay Terms', that have been produced by the Learning Centre which you might find useful.
